Using antibiotics to treat strangles is highly disputed among vets because some believe it prolongs the disease that leads to bastard strangles and it prevents the body from building a natural defense versus the bacteria. Administering antibiotics particularly prior to the abscesses rupture, could force the germs into the creature's system which ultimately results in bastard strangles.
These kinds of serious cases are seen more frequently in animals with a fragile disease fighting capability. In severe cases when a creature cannot breath because of the infections, a veterinarian may have to place a tracheotomy tube to allow your pet to breathe sufficiently. Isolate the contaminated horse immediately. The isolation area must prevent any direct connection with other horses. Turnout areas, drinking water and feed troughs, and tack items should not be shared with other horses. Speak to your veterinarian for treatment methods, particularly if the horse is having trouble breathing in, is not eating or is running a high fever.
