Fun activities in Fuerteventura
By Quentin Renford
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the island group known as the Canary Islands, sitting in the Atlantic just off from the coast of Africa. It has been added to UNESCO's list as a biosphere reserve, and it has a huge tourist industry due to its beautiful locations and the consistently warm climate. The island has many other activities, however, which also explain the large numbers of visitors.
Most of the coast, but particularly the northern shore, is subject to some amazing trade winds. This means that it is a perfect sport for some surfing, or wind surfing. Places like Generosa, Majanicho and the famous 'Suicides' are widely considered to be some of the best surf spots in the world. The best thing about surfing on the island, though is that there are places that test even the most experienced surfers, and places that are suitable for beginners. There are also lots of surf school around the island if you are looking to learn.
Another great, and often overlooked, activity is that of kite flying. Again, because of the amazing trade winds, you can fly some really impressive kites all day if you wanted. This is a great way to experience the beach, and is something that can be done with the whole family.
If you are on an island as beautiful as Fuerteventura, you must try your hand at hiking. The interior of the island has such beautiful views, and exploring the coastline might reveal a stunning abandoned beach for you to enjoy. The island has an unusually large biodiversity, which is good news for those hoping to spot some interesting specimens of flora and fauna.
For those trails that are particularly tough it might be fun to try to tackle them on a mountain bike. Some of the places on the island are so rugged and alien looking that you might be forgiven for thinking you were riding around on another planet. If you don't have the confidence to go out on your own there are always expeditions you can join.
