Be Mindful Of The Hurricane Season If You Plan To Go On A Cruise

By Nicholas Lancaster

Summer is usually the ideal time to take a vacation since the weather is warm and the kids are out of school. The lure of a cruise can be hard to pass up especially since Caribbean cruises can be deeply discounted in summer. However, you need to keep in mind that the hurricane season in the Caribbean lasts from June all the way until early November.

Cruise ships are very safe but they aren't indestructible. There have been a few tragedies involving cruise ships in the last decade. There is no reason to panic, but it is always very wise to realize that the cycles of Mother Nature must be kept in mind if you wish to enjoy a relaxing vacation. On a side note, you should be aware that cruise ships are equipped with sophisticated technology which allows them to forecast weather conditions, so in the majority of cases, there is little need to be overly concerned.

Cruise lines put the safety of passengers first, so they won't intentionally go through a major storm. Cruise lines can skip or change a port of call with little or no compensation. If the weather is going to be particularly severe, they can also cancel the cruise and provide their passengers with vouchers for future travel. But unfortunately, even if you get a voucher, a cancelled cruise can sometimes mean that you won't get a vacation at all, especially if your schedule is not too flexible.

Check with the cruise line company or your travel agent for information on changes due to weather. You can also purchase travel insurance, but be aware that most plans do not cover acts of God, so you should read all small print before you buy the coverage.

A storm may not be enough to cancel a cruise and you can still have an enjoyable time. You will still be able to enjoy indoor activities such as shows and classes of different types. You can also bring plenty of reading materials, music and movies for the whole family to enjoy.

And, don't forget to bring medications for sea sickness. Sometimes the waters are rough even in nice weather. If you feel sea sickness coming on, move toward the center of the ship, since this area doesn't sway as much.

So your holiday plans are not totally spoiled, have a backup plan in case the cruise is cancelled. It would be a good idea to embark in a fun place such as Orlando. If your cruise is cancelled then you can still head to Orlando and your family can enjoy Disneyworld. And in the event that the airport in the embarking city is closed, you can always consider road travel options.

Lastly, if you travel in the hurricane season plan for inclement weather and don't get upset if it rains the entire time. Nice weather is just a bonus in your vacation.
