Turkey's festivals and religious holidays

By Alfie Davis

Turkey has an extremely interesting history and is a country which has a fantastic culture. There are lots of events each year which share this amazing culture with the country's citizens as well as people from all over the world who visit the country. Part of the culture is creative arts and these are encouraged through a number of festivals which take place across the whole country each year so that people can show of their talent to like-minded people.

One of the largest events is Istanbul foundation for culture and arts' annual film festival in Istanbul. This festival is for people to come from all over Turkey to both show their films and to watch others in Istanbul's largest cinemas and theatres. The idea of the festival is to celebrate and encourage the creative individuals who are aiming to break into main stream areas and represent their home country of Turkey.

Istanbul plays host to more than just the film festival though as each year there are also festivals for theatre, jazz and other music too. The Jazz festival is the biggest of its kind in Turkey and lasts for 18 days. During the 18 day period, amateur and professional jazz musicians perform to other musicians and jazz fans and there are also tributes to some iconic jazz musicians too.

Festivals like these don't just happen in Istanbul though; they take place across the whole of Turkey. Ankara is another city which hosts a number of creative arts festivals. Like those in Istanbul, Ankara's festivals encourage musicians and film makers to perform and show their work to enthusiasts and they are rewarded for doing so with a number of different awards.

Turkey's population have very strong religious beliefs and most of them are Islamic. Because of these beliefs, they take Islamic holidays very seriously and during these times, most people close their businesses and spend time with their families instead. Tourism is affected in these times but they are very important to the Turkish people. The longest of these religious holidays is Kurban Bayrami which only lasts for five days.
