Australia's National Heritage

By Angela Benedict

People in Australia are well aware of their historic and natural heritage, and this is why they do their best to preserve it as well as they can. Australia may be a small continent, but it is rich in natural heritage, and has many wonderful touristic offers for those interested in taking a little longer trip. There are things for old and young, for adventurists and for those who are not. Anyway, whoever decides to visit Australia, won't regret it, and must find something that soothes their tastes.

The capital and the most populous city of the region is Adelaide, which is at the same time the fifth largest city in Australia. Over 1 million people currently live in Adelaide, and the city is very modern and popular for young. It also has a rich history, so people who are interested in times as they used to be should definitely visit the city. For those who like wine, Adelaide will open the doors of over 200 wine cellars. Australia is one of the leading wine producers, so why not try what it has to offer.

Apart from visiting Adelaide, we will now give you a brief insight in all the things you can do while you're there. We'll start with something good for the outdoors type. Hit the beach! Apart from sunbathing, there is the option of swimming and scuba diving in South Australia, which has gorgeous beaches. If you don't prefer these types of water sports, maybe fishing is better for you, and that is also an option. While on the beach don't forget to visit some restaurants and try lobster, oysters and abalone.

For people who like animals, we recommend the Adelaide Zoo, as it is the home to only two giant pandas in the southern hemisphere. This is also a nice place to take kids to. Don't skip visiting the Central Market in Adelaide, if you're not a fan of wine, skip the cellars, but visit the breweries (or visit both, but not in one day). Those who prefer to stay out of the city and want something calmer, South Australia offers, the already mentioned, Flinders Ranges, but you can also pa a visit to Hahndorf, which is one of the most beautiful towns in the hills of South Australia.

If we're to talk about flora and fauna of Flinders Ranges, there are many endemic species in both groups. Most plant are used to the semi-arid climate of the area, although there are also plants which grow on moist soil. Some plants Flinders Ranges is known for are mallee, black oak and cypress pine. Fern and reeds mostly grow in, already mentioned, moist areas. Those who love animals will maybe have a chance to see euros, red kangaroo and western gray kangaroo.

Finally, do not forget to taste a bit of the cuisine of South Australia. Some sort of wine will go perfectly with every meal, and if you have a chance prepare a great meal with fresh food bought at the Central Market of Adelaide.
